I just finished watching a movie with my pals and it got me thinking of how doing something good for people is an inexplicable act of kindness. It helps them and in most cases ease their pain. This notion has changed my perspective and attitude toward others. I remember my mother always discussing the countless blessings and peace that one can receive while engaged in charity work. She also encouraged me to be a part of such work. Heeding to her advice during my Bachelor’s degree, I joined a welfare society called Isra Welfare Society in Pakistan. The sole purpose of this society is to help the underprivileged ones in the society. I was a member of their organizing committee. My job was to make a team and work with them to organize charity events. Our first event was the “collection drive” where we collected money, clothes, books, and food stuff to support orphan children. We centred on education, health care, and financial. After a week, we went to an orphanage school. Trust me, those children were eagerly waiting for us, and they were excited to see us. They were smiling all the time. We distributed alms among them. I had never seen anyone that happy in my life and I was proud to be a part of it. Their happiness was beyond words. I realized at that point God has been so kind to us and blessed us with the best, but instead of thanking or praising Him, our greed takes over. On the other hand, there were these children who were happy and content with what little they had. That day I understood the meaning of true happiness, and it was one of the best days of my life. That moment taught me the biggest lesson of my life that I should always thank God for His countless blessings. I also realize it is not necessary to be part of any welfare society to help others, it can also be done individually by anyone willing to help others. It is not about how much you are giving, but it is about the intentions behind it.
Forward to Glasgow, I found that there are homeless people on the street, so I contemplated on what to do to bring a smile on their faces. Whenever I had time, I would buy fruits for them and would distribute among them. I also joined the Caledonian Islamic Student’s Association SOCIETY in GCU and took part in their charity week. We collected money to help people in different part of the world. It felt great. I hope to continue such work in the future. All these have helped me develop the common good attribute of confidence, global citizenship and responsible leadership.
To everyone reading this, we should take part in fundraising events and donate as much we can because it can save someone’s life or can make someone’s easier. You will be rewarded even more than you think. It is always the act that counts.
